So Why am I putting together this Series on Adventure Heroes?

My journey began in 1995 when my best friend died.   Janet and I had grown up together, enjoying many adventures, and her death, at just 33, was a huge shock.

The M People song, “Search for the Hero…”, that we played at her funeral has echoed in my head ever since.  Janet had been a hero and I longed to have her kind of inspiration and drive, but I had no idea how.

Now, after 13 years of thinking and searching, I have finally cracked it...the answer was in the song all along. The hero we’re looking for is inside ourselves.

But the trouble with that answer is that it is easy to say but hard to believe, and even harder to take action on.

So my next discovery was just as important. It is something that travellers, explorers, monks and mountaineers have known for centuries, though it has rarely been put into words.

It is the power of adventure to transform our lives… not just in the moment, but for a lifetime.

And that is not a discovery that I want to keep to myself.   I want to use this series of interviews as a way to contribute to many people all over the world.   Because each of us has a hero within.

Song Lyrics for M People Song "Search for the Hero"

Chorus:

You've got to search for the hero inside yourself.
Search for the secrets you hide.
Search for the hero inside yourself.
Until you find the key to your life.
