Is it August already?
You are probably a lot like me. You set goals and think of what you want to do in 2008. Then you wake up and it is late August already! Where has the year gone?
I have been having a huge year, in fact August itself has been huge. I've been in 3 different countries and met some incredible people. See the stories below and get inspired.
What about you? How are you going with the goals you set at the beginning of the year?
1. First of all, don't beat yourself. 2. Celebrate what you have achieved 3. Review your goals (you did write them down didn't you?) 4. Get out a fresh peice of paper and set some goals - any goal is better than none.
Studies show that people who write down their goals are 10 times more successful than those who don't.
If you want help then email me and I can give you some extra resources. Also, make sure at least one of your goals is an "Adventure Goal" - stretch yourself!
Adventure Heroes a finalist for National Geographic Award
It has been an enormous priviledge to be recognised by National Geographic in their recent "TOGA awards". 'The Outdoor Geographic Awareness' awards have been set up by Nat Geo Maps and Nat Geo Adventure magazine. The Adventure Heroes Series was a finalist in the individual section of the competition.
The TOGA Awards showcase outdoor businesses, and individuals that find new and creative ways to promote geographic awareness and build outdoor participation. The awards reflect National Geographic's mission to inspire more people to care about the planet and encourage individuals of all ages to explore the world around them. The Adventure Heroes Series certainly has a similar mission. The award ceremony was held at the massive Outdoor Retailers Trade Show in Salt Lake City, Utah. More about that in the next story. We were there, here is a picture of me with Mike Dyer from Nat Geo Maps and the list of finalists in each category. Whilst we did not win the award, it was a huge priviledge to be in the final three.
Outdoor Retailers Trade Show, Utah, USA
slack lining - not for slackersThis is an enormous trade show event held in Salt Lake City, Utah. And Adventure Coaching was there!
There are hundreds of booths with a vast array of the latest in outdoor stuff. You can only get in if you are in the outdoor industry so it is THE place to find out the lastest and greatest adventure ideas. I can't let you in on all the details, but there was one really cool thing that was new to me - slack lining - an amazing way to improve balance, core strength and concentration. I will put some more on this in upcoming blogs.
And I met some incredible adventurers there. Dave Hahn, who has climbed Everest 10 times was there and gave an amazing talk about his adventures all over the world. Dave and I had a beer afterwards and discussed the possibility of an Adventure Heroes interview - I'll let you know when that is coming.
The other person I met was Helen Thayer. More about her below.
Helen Thayer, Walking the Gobi at 65
Helen Thayer is actually a Kiwi. She got her original adventure inspiration in New Zealand and has gone on to walk to the North Pole (alone), the South Pole, and at the age of 65 she and her husband (only 74) walked all the way across the Gobi desert! She now lives in the United States, that is on the rare occasion when she is not out adventuring in remote parts of the earth. She was signing books at the Trade Show in Utah and I got a very brief interview with her.

Isn't she wonderful?
And I also got a really great interview with another incredible adventurer, Carol Masheter, she has just climbed Everest aged 61. More on her to come.
These people are inspirational for us. And almost all of them consider themselves to be ordinary. They have just set goals and then gone and done them. Sure, they are very big goals, but we can be inspired by their example.
So now is the time to set big goals and get the support you need to make them happen. Clearly age is no barrier!
What is next?
Sarah outside the Outdoor Retailers Trade ShowSo, it has been a big month so far. And there are some big projects that I have been working on this month.
I am about to realease a "Special Report" on the Power of Critical Moments
This is a really great resource which you will want to read. It is also designed to get you into action and give you tools to move forward.
Wishing you a life of adventure and inspiration
