The Adventure Coaching story

                                         “Follow your bliss”
                                                                                         - Joseph Campbell

How was Adventure Coaching born?

Adventure Coaching started as an idea… Our experience of adventure was of moments of challenge at many levels and along with that a sense of aliveness that was hard to match.

The idea was not so much the “YES”! of adventure – this is well known – but the idea that this momentary experience could be integrated into the whole of life. Not just an experience in the moment, but a way of being in every moment.

The Adventure Coaching framework was piloted and is now fully operational with clients around the world. It is proving to be a powerful new way of working and is at the cutting edge of the development of coaching. It is like a potent life coaching and sports coaching cocktail!

Sarah (see her profile on the Coaches Profile page) was working with her own coach and created a goal of “working where the juice is” – she wanted to transform her life and work so that every moment maximised the “juice factor”.

As she worked it through and drew on her extensive experience of adventures in the outdoors as well as in meditation it dawned on her that there is a powerful synergy between coaching and adventure.

This synergy between one to one coaching and adventure goals was largely untapped. So Sarah got into action and created “Adventure Coaching Limited” in New Zealand. She then worked with friends, adventure colleagues and qualified coaches to put together the coaching framework. This framework drew strongly on the work of David Rock in Results Coaching Systems (in particular the neuroscience involved) and also drew on experience of adventures through out the world.

Where do Heroes fit in?

We are never alone in our efforts and the business is all about inspiring others and enabling dreams to come true. So we were very excited to come up with the idea of promoting and supporting adventure heroes. Heroes at every level – from the totally out there adventurers taking on things that have never been done before, right through to the every day heroes that would otherwise be missed. (Check out more stories on our Heroes page)

Arthur Ashe (the first black winner of a major men's tennis championship) said it well:

“True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic.

It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost,

but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.”
