Latest Expedition Updates from Sarah
Over the next 6 weeks you will get to follow me as I take on an incredible Adventure. More about that below..
First, let me put you in the picture. This climb is training - working out how my body and mind will cope above 8000 metres, testing the gear, and testing the communications (like how this site works!).
All going well, it will enable me to head to Mount Everest in April 2011. When I go to Everest I will be taking people with me to Base Camp - not just anyone, but people who want to go 'Beyond' what they have done before and stretch themselves in a whole new way. If that sparks your interest then take a look by clicking here.
To give you a bit of a taste of what's coming here are some cool factoids on where I am heading:
Cho Oyu: 8201 metres high - 6th highest mountain in the world
Cho Who?
Cho Oyu lies in the Himalayas and is 20 km west of Mount Everest, on the border between China and Nepal. Cho Oyu means "Turquoise Goddess" in Tibetan.
Cho Oyu was first attempted in 1952 by an expedition which included Sir Edmund Hillary, but technical difficulties at an ice cliff above 6,650m (21,820ft) prevented them from summiting. (Today, these ice cliffs are normally ascended using fixed ropes.) Cho Oyu was first climbed on October 19, 1954 via the northwest ridge by Herbert Tichy, Joseph Jöchler and Sherpa Pasang Dawa Lama of an Austrian expedition.
While Cho Oyu is one of the easier 8,000 metre peak to climb, it still took Reinhold Mesner (truely all time great mountaineer) four attempts to climb it!! So clearly it is not to be under-estimated.
Where is it and What's the plan?
Stage 1: 28 August - I fly to Kathmandu and meet up with the climbing team
Stage 2: 1 September - we all fly over to Lhasa in Tibet
Stage 3: 3-6 Sept - travel by Jeep to the base of the mountain
Stage 4: 7-24 September - establish high camps and acclimitise by yo-yo-ing our way up the mountain until we and the weather are ready to go to the summit
Stage 5: From 24 - 30 September: The Summit push! all going well
Stage 6: Early October Return to Base Camp and travel back to Kathmandu by Jeep
Home by 7 October
You can follow my progress as it happens!
Take a look at my Spot Adventure page - this uses a GPS device to track my progress.
The map will start working when I arrive in Kathmandu on Sunday 29th August.
And please let me know what you think of this mapping tool - this is test of the equipment, so your opionions and support is incredibly valuable to me.
The map will be growing as the expedition progresses and will be a live update of my real time position!
