Clearing the mountain, the Chinese put on a party, and a walk to the Nangpa La

The Team at Nangpa La
This morning our Sherpa team left ABC early to climb to Camp 2 at 7000m. Although we have now finished our attempt to climb Cho Oyu we still have equipment staged at Camp 1 and 2. Tents, oxygen, climbing equipment, and food all have to be cleared from the mountain. Our Sherpa team is working with Tibetan porters who will help the Sherpa bring everything off the mountain and back to ABC today.

Last night the Chinese expedition put on a party for all climbers at there camp. All the climbers in camp gathered to celebrate the attempt to climb Cho Oyu. Although just about all the expedition teams are leaving without having stood on the summit of Cho Oyu there was still much to celebrate... good memories, the hard work of climbing to higher altitudes and establishing camps on Cho Oyu, new friends, and spending over a month in this incredible mountain setting. The drinks were on the Chinese, and the Sherpa and climbers celebrated in large traditional dancing circles.

This morning our team crossed the glacier opposite our camp and walked out to the Nangpa La Pass. At the pass the land drops away to Nepal on one side, and on the other Tibet. The pass is the traditional route used by traders crossing between Nepal and Tibet. In 1951 Hillary and Shipton crossed the Nangpa La and attempted to make the first ascent of Cho Oyu, making it to 6800m, just below the first ice cliff.

That's all for today. Tomorrow we will start to break camp and on the 2nd we will start our journey back to Kathmandu.
