The sun sets on Cho Oyu for the season

Sunset over Cho Oyu from ABC
Greetings All

This morning as planned a meeting of Sherpas took place at ABC to decide on the viability of safely fixing ropes on the summit slopes of Cho Oyu. The result of this meeting was a resounding no! In other words, due to the current and continuing avalanche danger no further attempt will be made in the near future to fix ropes on the summit slopes. For Adventure Consultants, like most other expeditions, no fixed ropes equals no further summit attempts.

Like us, the majority of expeditions have ended their attempt to climb Cho Oyu this season and have begun making plans for their return to Kathmandu.

For all our members this is obviously a very disappointing outcome and we commiserate strongly with them. However, Cho Oyu has spoken and at this time it is simply not safe to continue. For those expeditions with time on their side suitable conditions will eventually arise if they wait long enough and the weather then cooperates. There are also individuals who are willing to accept the risks of the current avalanche danger and will act independently to attempt the summit in the next few days; may there be no further accidents!

Tonight at ABC the Chinese have announced there will be a party/drinks at their camp and all expeditions are invited. This is in acknowledgment that climbing on Cho Oyu this season has ended for most expeditions.

We have ordered Yaks to arrive at our camp on the night of the 1st October. On the 2nd October our plan is to trek out and then drive to the border town of Zangmu. All going well we will return to Kathmandu on the afternoon of the 3rd.

Meanwhile the weather is pristine and we have two days still at ABC for yet more games of chess, videos and books.

Everyone is currently crying in their tents! Of course I am only joking as we are being terribly grown up and oh so philosophical!.

Our plan tomorrow is to walk over to the Nangpa La, a historic trading route that leads to Nepal.

It is a red wine and whisky evening for us!
