No legs... no problem

A few years ago I got the chance to crew for Tony Christiansen at a big event where he was speaking.  It was a rare opportunity to meet a great man.

Before the event Tony roared into the venue in his trusty old van - nothing flash here - and pulled out the bag with his scaffold in it.  He uses this as part of his talk.  He was grateful for our help (even though he was far better at assembling this than we were).  And soon we were laughing and joking with him.  He treated us like old family friends and was really easy to be around.

Then it was show-time for Tony and he was climbing up onto his scaffold on stage to give his talk.  As he was climbing up he appeared to slip and the crowd held their breath - Tony said "Whoops, I lost my footing"  which of course was a joke as he has no feet - the crowd was transformed to laughter.

The next hour of his talk was filled with laughter and tears as Tony took us all through his journey and adventurous life.  He had video on him climbing to the summit of Kilamanjaro, driving stock racing cars and many other things that those of us with legs have never done.

In short, he was amazing and also very human and approachable.

So when I was putting together this Adventure Heroes Series it became clear that he would make a huge contribution to the Series.
